Colin Lundeen (Sr., Victoria, B.C., Canada), a 6-8 setter for No. 1 IPFW has been named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Player of the Week. Lundeen was named the MIVA Tournament Most Valuable Player after leading the Mastodons to the Tournament Championship with 3-0 wins over No. 11 Loyola-Chicago and No. 6 Ohio State. He had 39 assists, 10 digs, five assist blocks and a kill against the Ramblers and posted 36 assists, an ace serve, six digs, a solo block and six kills against the Buckeyes. Lundeen averaged 12.50 assists, 2.67 digs, 1.00 blocks and 1.17 kills per game for the two matches.
Matt McCarthy (So., Wheaton, Ill.), a 6-8 middle attacker for No. 13 Ball State has been named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Player of the Week. McCarthy helped fourth-seeded Ball State to a 3-0 (30-26, 30-27, 30-26) victory over fifth-seeded Lewis in the MIVA Tournament quarterfinals. He had 11 kills in the match while hitting .588. McCarthy six digs, five total blocks (one solo and four assists), and two assists against the Flyers. McCarthy averaged 4.67 points, 3.67 kills, 2.00 digs and 1.67 blocks per game.
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association recognizes a total of 70 players who have been named to the MIVA Academic All-Conference Team. To be eligible, athletes must have achieved at least a career 3.00 grade point average on a 4.0 scale after the completion of the fall semester at their respective institutions.

Ohio State’s Daniel Mathews named Player of the Year, OSU’s Pete Hanson named Coach of the Year and Ball State’s Jeff Schmitz and IPFW’s Matt Pliski share Freshman of the Year honors
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association has announced its All-Conference selections for the 2007 season. By a vote of the conference coaches, Ohio State’s Daniel Mathews (S, Sr., Shorewood, Wis.) has been named the MIVA Player of the Year and Buckeye coach Pete Hanson was selected as the Coach of the Year. Ball State’s Jeff Schmitz (S, Fr., Fenton, Mo.) and IPFW’s Matt Pliski (L, Fr., St. Charles, Mo.) share Freshman of the Year honors.
Mathews guided the Buckeyes to a 10-2 conference record and the regular season MIVA championship. He averaged 12.53 assists per game in conference play, ranking second in the league. Mathews averaged .63 kills, .42 aces, .91 digs and .79 blocks per game in conference play.
Hanson is in his 23rd season with Ohio State and now has been named the Coach of the Year seven times. He has won 10 regular season championships including the 2007 title and has won the MIVA Tournament six times.
Schmitz averaged 10.95 assists per game in conference matches, ranking fifth. He ranked 20th in digs per game at 1.36. Schmitz averaged .63 kills, .13 aces and .54 blocks per game in league play.
Pliski averaged 2.02 digs per game in conference matches, ranking fifth in the league. He had a .944 reception percentage in handling 356 attempts in conference play.
Regular season champion Ohio State has six players receiving All-Conference honors. Joining Mathews on the first team is teammate Layne Dreven (MH, Sr., Pittsburgh). Named to the second team from Ohio State were John Albertson (MH, Jr., Ballwin, Mo.), Robbie Klein (OH, Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio), Conor Martin (L, Jr., Avon Lake, Ohio) and Dan Meske (OH, Sr., Willow Spring, Ill.). Loyola and IPFW had four players each receive All-Conference honors. Loyola’s first team selections include Zach Bailey (L, Sr., Glendale, Wis.), James Grunst (MH, Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) and Brian Guntli (S, 6-3, Sr., St. Louis, Mo.). Ian Anderson (OPP, Jr., Wauwatosa, Wis.) was named to the second team for the Ramblers. IPFW’s first team selections included Colin Lundeen (S, Sr., Victoria, B.C., Canada), C.J. Macias (OH, Jr., Ft. Ethan Pheister (Fr., Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood High School), a 6-5 setter for then-No. 15 Ball State has been named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Player of the Week. Pheister earned the award for his outstanding play last week in helping the Cardinals to three victories last week. After not playing in the first two games at Lewis, Pheister came off the bench to guide the Cardinals to a pivotal MIVA 3-2 win which secured a first round home match in the conference tournament for Ball State. Prior to Pheister entering the contest, the Cardinals were hitting .200 (26-15-55) for the match. In the third game, the Cardinals hit .474 (22-4-38) with Pheister as the setter, while hitting .404 (50-12-94) over the last three games, including a .462 (7-1-13) rate of success in the fifth game. He had 40 assists adding four digs, two kills and an assist block against the Flyers. Two nights later, Pheister recorded his first start since the third match of the season, leading the Cardinals to a 3-1 upset of No. 6 Ohio State. In the match, Pheister guided the BSU offense to a .245 (61-26-143) attack percentage, while recording a career-high two service aces adding 47 assists, four kills, three digs and two assist blocks. Pheister closed the week by guiding the Ball State offense to a .266 (43-18-94) hitting mark in a 3-0 win over Rutgers-Newark, while recording a career-best five total blocks (1 solo/4 assists), adding 39 assists, four digs and a kill. For the three matches, Pheister averaged 12.60 assists and 1.10 digs per game.
Robbie Klein (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller High School), a 6-3 middle blocker for then-No. 8 Ohio State, has been named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. Klein earned the award for his outstanding play last week in helping the Buckeyes to a five-game, come-from-behind win over then-No. 6 Penn State and two sweeps of Quincy. In the match against the Nittany Lions, Klein had 14 kills, four digs, two total blocks and handled 32 reception attempts without an error in the 3-2 victory. In Ohio State's next match, their first win over Quincy, he again had 14 kills while hitting for a .571 hitting percentage, and adding three aces, three digs and one block assist in the match. The following night, Klein hit Quincy with 16 kills, a .619 hitting percentage, three aces, nine digs and one block assist in the Buckeyes' 3-0 win. For the week, Klein averaged 4.0 kills, a .457 hitting percentage, 1.45 digs and 4.73 points per game while helping lead Ohio State to no less than a share of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association regular season championship. This marks the 10th time a men’s volleyball player from Ohio State has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week, and the first since John Albertson was selected on March 6, 2006.
James Grunst, (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette University High School), a 6-8 middle blocker for 12th-ranked Loyola-Chicago, has been named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Shondell/Dunlap Division and the Sports Import/AVCA Division I-II Men’s National Player of the Week. Grunst earns the awards after helping his team to two solid wins last week, including an upset of then-No. 7 Ohio State. In the Ramblers’ first match last week, a 3-0 win over Rutgers-Newark, Grunst had six kills on seven attempts and no errors for an impressive. .857 hitting percentage, while also adding one ace and six total blocks in the match. He followed that up with 14 kills on 19 attempts and no errors for a .737 hitting percentage in Loyola-Chicago’s 3-1 upset of Ohio State. Grunst also had two aces, two digs and three total blocks in the win. For the week, Grunst averaged 2.86 kills, a .769 hitting percentage, 1.29 blocks and 3.93 points per game, while helping the Ramblers to a 20-6 overall record and 7-4 in the conference.
Nick Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller High School), a 6-8 outside hitter for 15th-ranked Ball State, has been named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Shondell/Dunlap Division and the Sports Import/AVCA Division I-II Men’s National Player of the Week. Meyer earns the award after two strong matches last week, including an upset of then-No. 9 Pacific, en route to the 2007 Don Shondell/Active Ankle Challenge title. In the Cardinals’ first match, against George Mason, Meyer had 25 kills on 43 attempts for a .442 hitting percentage in the four-game win. He also chipped in eight digs and five total blocks. He followed that up with another 20-plus kill performance, this time putting away 26 kills in 58 attempts for a .328 hitting percentage in Ball State’s five-game upset of Pacific. He also added two aces, 10 digs and three total blocks in the victory. For the week, Meyer averaged 5.67 kills, 2.0 digs, 0.89 total blocks and 6.44 points per game, hitting at an impressive .376 clip.
Shane Olson (West Chicago, Ill), a 6-2 senior outside hitter for Carthage (20-7, 6-0 MIVA Coleman Division), has been named the MIVA Coleman Division Player of the Week. In 3-0 wins over St. Ambrose (30-22, 30-15, 30-24) and Cardinal Stritch (30-22, 30-22, 30-21) Olson averaged 2.89 points, 2.78 kills and 1.67 blocks per game for the two matches. He had 15.5 points against St. Ambrose recording 15 kills and an assist block while hitting .385 and collecting six digs. In the Cardinal Stritch match, Olso had 10.5 points with 10 kills and an assist block while hitting .300 and added nine digs.
Jared Dayton (Laguna Hills, Calif./Mission Viejo H.S.), a 6-6 senior/junior outside hitter for the Lewis Flyers (14-7, 5-4 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division), has been named the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week. Dayton collected a career-high 33 points in the Flyers’ thrilling five-game win over No. 12 Loyola Chicago (16-5, 5-3) last Tuesday. Dayton had a match/career-high 31 kills, hitting .444 in the win over the Ramblers. His 31 kills were the most by any Flyer since the 2003 season and were four shy of the school’s single-match record during the rally-scoring era. He added two block assists, two digs and an ace serve in the match. Dayton followed his effort at Loyola Chicago with a .500 hitting performance in the Flyers’ three-game sweep of Clarke on Friday night. In two games he had eight kills and a block assist. Dayton averaged 5.93 points and 5.57 kills per game while hitting .455 in the Flyers’ two wins last week.
Robbie Klein (Cincinnati, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller High School), a 6-3 junior/sophomore outside hitter for seventh-ranked Ohio State (16-1, 5-0 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division), has been named the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week. Klein scored a match-high 19.5 points in OSU’s (16-1, 5-0 MIVA) 3-1 victory over Ball State (10-7, 4-2) to expand their lead in the MIVA Standings. Klein had a team-high 17 kills while hitting .312 against the Cardinals. He added four digs, a solo block and three assist blocks in the match. He also handled a team-high 32 reception attempts without an error. With the match tied at one game each, Klein with a kill and solo block overcame a 23-22 Ball State lead to put Ohio State ahead, 24-23. He added a kill to make it 28-24 leading to a 30-26 game three win. In game three, Klein had a team-high seven kills while hitting .333. He added two digs, a solo block and an assist block in the game. For the match, Klein averaged 4.88 points, 4.25 kills, 1.00 blocks and 1.00 digs per game.
Daniel Mathews (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood High School), a 6-6 junior setter for seventh-ranked Ohio State (15-1, 4-0 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division), has been named the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week. Mathews directed Ohio State (15-1, 4-0 MIVA) to road victories at Rutgers-Newark (3-0) and George Mason (3-1) last week. The Buckeyes have won eight straight matches and 15 of 16 this season. In the 30-27, 30-25, 30-27 win at Rutgers-Newark, Mathews recorded 51 assists (17.00 per game). He added a season-high five kills while hitting .667. Mathews added four digs and two assist blocks in a match that Ohio State hit .375 and had three players with double-figure kills. At George Mason in a 31-33, 30-27, 30-23, 30-26 win, Mathews had a career-high 72 assists (18.00 per game). He added three kills (.250), an ace serve, four digs and three assist blocks against the Patriots. Ohio State hit .321 in the match as five players posted double-figure kills. For the two matches, Mathews averaged 17.57 assists, 1.14 kills, .14 aces, 1.14 digs and .71 blocks per game. On the season, Mathews is averaging 14.07 assists per game and probably will lead the country in that category this week. He ranks second on the team in aces per game at .39, second in blocking at 1.19 per game and is fifth on the team in digs per game at 1.20.
Dan Meske (Willow Springs,Ill./Lyons Township High School), a 6-1 outside hitter for seventh-ranked Ohio State (13-1, 4-0 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division), has been named the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week. Meske posted a team-high 18.5 points in the 3-0 home win over Lewis. He had a team-high 17 kills while hitting .556, adding an ace serve, an assist block and seven digs. He hit .857 (6K-0E-7A) in game one, .500 (5-1-8) in game two and .417 (6-1-12) in game three. He had the game winning kill in games one and three. Meske produced a career-high 23.5 points in the win over sixth-ranked IFPW. He had a team-high 19 kills while hitting .457. He added two ace serves, five digs, a solo block and three assists in OSU’s second victory over IPFW this season. Trailing 1-0 in the match, Meske hit .667 (8-0-12) in game two to help even the match at one game each. He had a kill (point 27) and an ace serve (point 28) in helping OSU to a 30-27 game three win again the Mastodons. For the two matches, Meske averaged 6.00 points, 5.14 kills, .43 aces, 1.71 digs and .71 blocks per game. He has had double-figure kills in eight of his last nine matches. Meske has started all 14 matches this season after three seasons at defensive specialist/libero.
Mike Mocchi (Wheeling, Ill./Buffalo Grove High School), a 6-6 junior outside hitter for MSOE (5-9, 2-2 MIVA Coleman Division), has been named the MIVA Coleman Division Player of the Week. In four road matches last week Mocchi averaged 5.89 points and 5.21 kills per game. In the 3-2 loss to SUNY New Paltz, he had 25 kills and two ace serves. Mocchi, playing in two games, recorded 10 kills, an ace serve and one block in the 3-0 (30-20, 30-15, 30-25) win at Polytechnic. He posted 21 kills, an ace serve and three assist blocks against Stevens Tech in a 3-0 (30-26, 31-29, 30-25) loss. Mocchi, in a 3-1 (30-24, 27-30, 30-23, 30-25) loss at Ramapo, he recorded 17 kills, an ace serve, a solo block and two assist blocks. This is Mocchi’s fourth Player of the Week honor. He has been honored twice this season and received the honor two times in 2006.
Vitor Oliveira (Caxias Do Sul, RS, Brazil/CETEC High School), a 6-6 middle hitter for sixth-ranked IPFW (9-1, 4-1 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division), has been named the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week. Oliveira hit a career-high .769 in the Mastodon’s 3-1 (30-32, 30-20, 33-31, 30-21) at Mercyhurst. He totaled 15.5 points in the match, collecting 11 kills, an ace serve, three digs and a team-high seven assist blocks. Oliveira, in game two, was five for five (1.000) in kills with three assist blocks and an ace serve. He hit .400 (3-1-5) in game three, scoring a kill with the match tied at 31 to put the Mastodons ahead, 32-31, leading to a 33-31 win in that game. Oliveira then went three for three (1.000) in kills in game four, adding four assist blocks. For the match, Oliveira averaged 5.33 points, 4.83 kills, 1.33 digs and .67 blocks per game.
Nick Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller High School), a 6-8 outside attacker for Ball State (6-4, 1-0 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division), has been named the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week. Meyer, named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2007 Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic, helped Ball State to 3-0 victories over Rutgers-Newark (30-27, 30-18, 30-18) and Springfield College (30-25, 30-19, 30-24) last week. He posted a team-high 21 kills against Rutgers-Newark while hitting .586, adding four digs, two assist blocks and an ace serve. Meyer had a team-high 15 kills and shared team-high honors with 10 digs against Springfield. His 15 kills and 10 digs was his second double-double of the season. He hit .464 in the match, adding two solo blocks, three assist blocks and an ace serve. In the two matches, Meyer averaged 6.00 kills, 2.33 digs and 1.17 blocks per game while hitting .526. This marks the fifth time Meyer has been named Player of the Week. He received the honor twice in 2006 and 2007 and once in 2005.

Meyer had a team-high 21 points in Ball State’s 3-1 (30-25, 25-30, 30-25, 30-26) home win over Lewis. It was the Cardinals’ third consecutive victory. Meyer had a team-high 17 kills against the Flyers, adding an ace serve, a solo block, 12 digs and four assist blocks. He averaged 5.25 points, 4.25 kill, 3.00 digs and 1.25 blocks per game while hitting .175. Meyer, on the season is averaging 4.87 points (ranking 13th nationally), 4.60 kills (ranking 12th nationally), 1.72 digs and .72 block per game. This marks the fourth time Meyer has been named Player of the Week. He received the honor twice in 2006 and once in 2005.
Dan Goray (Addison Trail, Ill./Addison Trail High School), a 6-6 middle hitter for MSOE (3-4, 1-0 MIVA Coleman Division), has been named the MIVA Coleman Division Player of the Week. Goray recorded team-highs of five ace serves and 12 digs in MSOE’s 3-1 (30-25, 30-24, 22-30, 30-27) win over sixth-ranked (NAIA) Cardinal Stritch. He had eight kills, two solo blocks and three assist blocks in the match. In the fourth game, Goray broke a 22-all tie, served for six consecutive points, including two ace serves, to help win the match. He also had a .864 serve reception percentage, handling 19 of 22 attempts.
Robbie Klein (Cincinnati, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller High School), a 6-3 outside hitter for 11th-ranked Ohio State (7-0, 0-0 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division), has been named the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week. Klein helped Ohio State to wins over Rutgers-Newark, 3-0 (30-26, 30-28, 30-18) and Carthage, 3-1 (30-24, 26-30, 32-30, 30-21) last week to keep the Buckeyes undefeated at 7-0. Klein had a team-high 12 kills against Rutgers-Newark adding two assists, two ace serves four digs and an assist block for 14.5 points. Against Carthage, Klein posted career-highs of 29.5 points, 23 kills, five ace serves and a season-high six digs in the victory. Tied at one game each against the Red Men, he had seven kills in seven attempts in game three. Down by as many as five points (25-20), Klein had a kill in a four-point OSU run to cut the lead to 25-24. He scored OSU’s next three points to keep OSU in the game at 28-27. A Carthage error tied the game at 28. Klein’s fifth ace serve of the match gave OSU a 29-28 lead. OSU won the game, 32-30. Klein then had six kills in nine attempts in game four to help end the match. In the final two games, Klein hit .813 (13-16). His five ace serves in the match ties for third on the OSU match record list. As a passer, he had a .940 serve reception percentage handling 50 of 53 serves in the two matches (11 with no errors against Rutgers-Newark and 36 of 39 against Carthage). For the two matches Klein averaged 6.29 points, 5.00 kills, 1.00 aces, 1.43 digs and .57 blocks per game while hitting .344.
Ian Anderson (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa East High School), a 6-4 opposite for 13th-ranked IPFW (3-1, 1-1 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division), has been named the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week. Anderson averaged 7.38 points, 6.38 kills and hit .464 in the two matches last week when Loyola Chicago lost 3-2 (25-30, 28-30, 31-29, 30-20, 15-11) to No. 7 IPFW and defeated Mercyhurst, 3-0 (30-13, 30-22, 30-21). He posted 33 points against IPFW with a career-high 28 kills adding an ace serve, five digs, a solo block and six assist blocks while hitting .373. Anderson had his third 20-plus kill match of the season with 23 against Mercyhurst while hitting .606. He added an ace serve, four digs and four assist blocks in the contest.
Mike Mocchi (Wheeling, Ill./Buffalo Grove High School), a 6-8 outside hitter for MSOE (2-3, 1-0 MIVA Coleman Division), has been named the MIVA Coleman Division Player of the Week. He had a team-high 14 points in the 3-0 (30-20, 30-19, 30-20) loss at 13th-ranked Loyola. Mocchi hit .280 and added two ace serves, a team-high six digs and an assist in the match. In the 3-2 (30-28, 21-30, 30-26, 28-30, 15-12) loss at Newman, he had a team-high 22 points with a team-high 19 kills, one ace serve and two solo blocks. He hit .143 in the match and added 11 digs. For the two matches, Mocchi averaged 4.50 points and 3.88 kills per game while hitting .185. He also averaged 2.12 digs per game. This is Mocchi’s third Player of the Week honor. He received the honor two times in 2006.
C. J. Macias (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas High School), a 6-4 junior outside hitter for seventh-ranked IPFW (2-0, 0-0 MIVA), has been named the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week. Macias helped the Mastodons to 3-0 home wins over St. Francis (30-21, 30-19, 30-26) and eighth-ranked Penn State (30-28, 30-28, 30-25) last week. He had a match-high 20 kills and eight digs against St. Francis, adding five assist blocks and an ace serve while hitting .548. Against Penn State, Macias had a match-high 18 kills, adding two digs and an assist block while hitting .312. For the two matches, he averaged 7.00 points, 6.33 kills, 1.67 digs and 1.00 blocks per game. This is the fifth Player of the Week honor for Macias. He received three in 2006 at IFPW and one in 2005 at Findlay. He has also been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men’s National Player of the Week.
IPFW has three preseason All-Conference selections, Loyola, Ohio State and Ball State have two each
COLUMBUS, Ohio-- IFPW has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the Shondell/Dunlap
Division of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association by a vote of
the division coaches. The Mastodons finished second last year in the regular
season and won the MIVA Tournament to advance to the NCAA Championship. Ohio State
was picked to finish second, Loyola third and Ball State fourth. Lewis was picked fifth, Quincy sixth and Mercyhurst seventh to round out the voting.
The coaches also
selected the 2007 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division preseason All-Conference Team
comprised of nine players and a libero. Five squads are represented on the team
with IFPW having three players with Loyola, Ohio State and Ball State having
two teach and Lewis one. Voted to the team from IPFW were C.J. Macias, Colin
Lundeen and Jost Stewart. Named from Loyola were James Grunst and Brian Guntli
and from Ohio State, Dan Mathews and John Albertson. Ball State’s Nick Meyer
and Ian Peckler were named to the team as was Jared Dayton from Lewis.
Non-conference
matches in the MIVA being Friday, Jan. 5 when Ohio State hosts MSOE.
Shondell/Dunlap Division play begins Friday, Jan. 19 when Loyola hosts IPFW and
Mercyhurst plays at Lewis.

-- Carthage has been tabbed as the favorite to win the Coleman Division of the
Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MVIA) by a vote of the
conference coaches for the second year in a row. Carthage received all three
first place votes while MSOE was picked second, Clarke third and Central State
fourth. Central State,
a provisional member of the Coleman Division, is not eligible for the
tournament championship. Last season Clarke won the Coleman Division regular season
championship with Carthage winning the tournament championship.
The coaches also
selected the 2007 MIVA Coleman Division preseason All-Conference Team comprised
of 10 players (due to a tie) and a libero. Carthage dominated the team with
five selections while Clarke and MSOE had three players each named to the team.
Voted to the team from Carthage were Ryan Baumgartner, TJ Bellei, Rob Koehler,
Shane Olson and Matt Ulmer. Clarke players on the team included Andy Aciacian,
Ed Frederick and Bryce Kingsley and from MSOE, Dan Goray, Kevin House and Mike
Mocchi.
The MIVA Coleman
Division begins non-conference play Friday, Jan 5 when MSOE plays at Ohio
State. Clarke begins competition Tuesday, Jan. 9 at Ball State and Carthage
opens play Friday, Jan. 12 at the UC-Santa Cruz Tournament.
