Josh Stewart, a 6-8 sophomore middle hitter for eighth-ranked IPFW (23-6, 9-3 MIVA), has been chosen the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week and the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. Stewart captured the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament most valuable player award after leading the Mastodons to a five-game win over 12th -ranked Ball State and a four-game victory 10th -ranked Loyola-Chicago, which was ranked eighth at the time of the match. He hit .507 for the two matches while averaging 4.77 points, 4.11 kills and 1.33 blocks per game. Stewart contributed 21 kills with a .556 attack percentage and five block assists against Ball State in the MIVA Tournament semifinals. He collected 16 kills and seven block assists with a .452 attack percentage in upsetting MIVA Tournament top-seed Loyola-Chicago in the championship match. Stewart holds a season attack percentage of .428 with averages of 3.07 points, 2.25 kills and 1.53 blocks per game. IPFW earned the MIVA's automatic bid into the NCAA National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship set for May 4-6 at Penn State University.
Andy Cole, a 6-6 senior outside hitter for 15th-ranked Ohio State (20-11, 7-5 MIVA), has been chosen the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week. Cole scored a team-high 21.5 points in OSU's 3-1 (27-30, 30-22, 30-28, 30-22) victory over Quincy in the MIVA Tournament quarterfinals. Cole had a team-high 20 kills while hitting .444, adding three digs and three assist blocks. With the match tied at one game each, Cole had five kills in seven swings (.714) to help OSU to a 30-28 game three win. His 20 kills and 21.5 points in the match were season highs for Cole. Over the season, Cole has not played in 12 matches and saw limited action in seven others. He has made four consecutive starts for the Buckeyes producing a four-match winning streak for Ohio State. In the last four matches, Cole has averaged 5.08 points, 4.15 kills, 1.38 digs, 1.00 blocks and is hitting .450.
Clarke's Miron, Carthage's Bellei and MSOE's Goray receive top honors
Columbus, Ohio -- The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association has named the Coleman Division All-Conference selections for the 2006 season. T.J. Bellei (MB, So., Lake Forest, Ill.) of Carthage has been named the MIVA Coleman Division Player of the Year and Dan Goray (MH/OH, Fr., Addison, Ill.) of MSOE was selected the MIVA Coleman Division Freshman of the Year. Clarke's first year head coach Chris Miron has been named the MIVA Coleman Division Coach of the Year in leading the Crusaders to the Coleman Division Championship.
Bellei helped Carthage to a second place finish in the MIVA Coleman Division and won the Coleman Tournament Championship. In conference statistics, he ranked eighth in points at 3.50 per game, seventh in kills at 2.44 and is tied for fifth in ace serves per game at .44. Bellei ranks ninth in hitting at .235. Goray was ranked first in ace serves at 1.00 in conference play and was fourth in kills per game at 3.16, fourth in points at 4.47 and 12th in digs at 1.58.
Coleman Division champion Carthage placed five players on the Division All-Conference team while regular season champion Clarke had four players and MSOE, two. Along with Player of the Year Bellei, Carthage placed Ryan Baumgartner (L, Jr., Naperville, Ill.), Rob Koehler (MB, Jr., Waukesha, Wis.), Shane Olson (OH, Jr., West Chicago, Ill.) and Matt Ulmer (S, Sr., Buffalo Grove, ill.) on the team. Clarke's Andy Accacian (S, So., Oakland, Calif.), Ed Frederick (MH, So., Dubuque, Iowa), Tyler Galstad (Opp/S, Sr., Burlington, Wis.) and Erik Vogt (MH, 6-4, Sr., Chicago, Ill.) were named to the team as were MSOE's Freshman of the Year Goray and Mike Moochi (OH, So., Wheeling, Ill.).

Columbus, Ohio -- The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association has announced its All-Conference selections for the 2006 season. By a vote of the conference coaches, Loyola's Chris Kozlarek (OPP, Sr., Evergreen Park, Ill) has been named the MIVA Player of the Year and Rambler coach Shane Davis repeats as MIVA Coach of the Year. Ohio State's John Albertson (MB, Fr., Ballwin, Mo) was named the MIVA Freshman of the Year.
Kozlarek played a key role in leading Loyola to the MIVA regular season championship. In conference statistics he ranked second in points per game at 5.28, second in kills at 4.39, second in ace serves at .44, seventh in digs at 2.31 and 10th in hitting percentage at .311. Davis, in his third year with Loyola (22-6, 11-1 MIVA), guided the Ramblers to its third league championship in the history of the program. Albertson, in conference statistics, ranks second in blocks per game at 1.51, 18th in kills at 2.35, 15th in points at 3.22 and sixth in hitting percentage at .364.
Regular season champion Loyola had four players named MIVA first team All-Conference. Along with Player of the Year Kozlarek, the Ramblers' James Grunst (MH, Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.), Brian Guntli (S, Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) and John Thuet (L, Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) were named to the first team. IPFW, Ball State and Ohio State had two players each named to the first team. IFPW's C.J. Macias (OPP, So., Fr. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Serda Sikca (MH, Sr., Istanbul, Turkey) were joined by Ball State's Dave Carlson (S, Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Nick Meyer (OPP, Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Ohio State's Albertson and Daniel Mathews (S., So., Shorewood, Wis.) on the first team..
Ball State had three players named to the MIVA second team All-Conference squad. They include Evan Berg (OH, Sr., Bristol, Wis.), Pat Durbin (OH, Jr., Louisville, KY) and Ian Peckler (L, Jr., Vernon Hills, Ill.). IPFW and Lewis placed two players each on the second team. IPFW's Colin Lundeen (S., Jr., Victoria, B.C., Canada) and Josh Stewart (MH, So., St. Mary's, Ont, Canada) were joined by Lewis' Drew Pickering (OH, Fr., Wauwatosa, Wis.) and Alex Vigansky (MH, Fr., Kenosha, Wis). Nick Meyer, a 6-8 junior outside attacker for 14th-ranked Ball State (20-6, 8-4 MIVA), has been chosen the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week. Meyer scored a match-high 31 points in the 3-2 (19-30, 26-30, 30-26, 30-28, 15-11) home loss to 10th-ranked Penn State. He recorded 25 kills in the match while hitting .404. Meyer added match-highs of 14 digs and four ace serves against the Nittany Lions. Additionally, he posted four assist blocks and two assists. Meyer's 25 kills and 14 digs was his fifth double-double of the season and his four service aces were a season high. For the match, he averaged 6.20 points, 5.00 kills, 2.80 digs, .80 aces and .80 blocks per game.
Nick Meyer, a 6-8 junior outside attacker for 14th-ranked Ball State (20-5, 8-4 MIVA), has been chosen the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week. Meyer had a match-high 23.5 points in the, 3-0 (30-21, 31-29, 30-22) upset victory over No. 14 Ohio State. He posted a match-high 19 kills while hitting .406. Meyer added three ace serves, a solo block and an assist block. Against Ohio State, he averaged 7.83 points, 6.33 kills, 1.00 aces and .67 blocks per game.

Chris Kozlarek, a 6-3 senior opposite for ninth-ranked Loyola University-Chicago (19-6, 9-1 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division), has been chosen the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week. Kozlarek averaged 5.90 points a game on 5.20 kills, 2.00 digs and 1.40 blocks a game in leading Loyola to a pair of victories in MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division action last week. In the Ramblers' 3-0 win at Ohio State, Kozlarek tallied a match-best 16 kills and added six digs and four block assists. Kozlarek then contributed 10 kills, four digs, three block assists and two set assists in only two games during LU's 3-0 win at Mercyhurst on April Fool's Day. He is averaging a team-best 4.14 kills and 2.33 digs per game for the season.

Shane Olson, a 6-2 junior outside hitter for third-ranked Carthage College (12-12, 4-2 MIVA Coleman Division), has been selected the MIVA Coleman Division Player of the Week. Olson had a match-high 27 kills in the 3-1 (30-23, 30-27, 28-30, 30-23) victory over MSOE in the MIVA Coleman Division Tournament. He added three ace serves and seven digs in the contest. He posted a match-high 18 kills, eight digs and an ace serve in the 3-1 (31-29, 30-20, 27-30, 30-21) win at Clarke to capture the Coleman Division Tournament. With the win, Carthage advances in the MIVA Tournament quarterfinals to face the No. 2 seed May 21 or 22. Olson averaged 6.12 points, 5.62 kills and 1.88 digs per game for the two matches.

James Grunst, a 6-8 junior middle blocker for 10th-ranked Loyola University-Chicago (17-6, 7-1 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division), has been chosen the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week and the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. He ignited the Ramblers to a four-game win over Ball State on March 24. Grunst averaged 6.25 points, 5.25 kills, 1.00 blocks and 0.50 aces per game while hitting .731 on 26 attempts. He tallied 25 points against the fourth-place Cardinals with a season-high 21 kills. Grunst added two aces and four block assists in the victory. He holds season averages of 6.25 points, 2.75 kills, 1.29 blocks and 0.24 aces per game with a .490 cumulative hitting percentage. Loyola-Chicago leads the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division and faces third-place Ohio State on March 31 and Mercyhurst on April 1.

Matt Ulmer, a 6-8 senior setter for fifth-ranked Carthage College (10-12, 4-2 MIVA Coleman Division), has been selected the MIVA Coleman Division Player of the Week and the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III Men's National Player of the Week. Ulmer helped the Red Men to an upset sweep of third-ranked UC Santa Cruz on March 25. He averaged 4.33 points, 10.6 assists, 3.33 kills, 0.66 blocks, 1.66 digs and 0.33 aces per game while hitting .714. Ulmer led Carthage to a .349 team attack percentage versus UC Santa Cruz, which is .149 higher than the team's season attack percentage. He contributed 32 assists, 10 kills on 14 errorless attacks, two blocks, five digs and an ace. He averages 2.39 points, 9.09 assists, 1.59 kills, 0.68 blocks, 1.91 digs and 0.13 aces per game this season with a .282 individual attack percentage. Carthage hosts Milwaukee School of Engineering on March 30 in the MIVA Tournament and would advance to play Clarke on April 1 should it win.
The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament will open play March 30 with Coleman Division members Carthage, the eighth-seed and ninth-seed MSOE playing at Carthage. The Carthage/MSOE winner will advance to play seventh-seed Clarke, April 1, at Clarke. That winner will advance to the MIVA Tournament Quarterfinals as the No. 7 seed. Three quarterfinal matches will be played April 21-22, with the No. 1 seed receiving a bye in the round. No. 1 to No. 6 seeds are based on the regular season finish, not including Lewis, in the Shondell/Dunlap Division. The No. 2, 3 and 4 seeds will host the quarterfinal matches with the three winners advancing to the semifinals, April 27, hosted by the No. 1 seed. The semifinal winners will advance to the MIVA Tournament Championship match, April 29, with that winner receiving the MIVA automatic bid to the NCAA Championship Semifinals, May 4 at Penn State.
Drew Pickering, a 5-11 freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist Lewis (6-12, 2-4 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association), has been chosen the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week. In 3-1 victories at Carthage (30-28, 23-30, 30-25, 30-28), against Clarke (30-20, 30-27, 26-30, 30-24) and a 0-3 (33-35, 22-30, 14-30) loss to NAIA No. 1 Lindenwood. Pickering had a career-high 28 kills and hit .460 at Carthage. He added an ace serve, five digs and five assist blocks. Against Clarke, he had 21 kills (.204), adding three ace serves, a career-high 15 digs and three assist blocks marking the first double-double for Lewis this season. Against Lindenwood, Pickering had 14 kills (.158) and four digs. For the three matches, he averaged 6.45 points, 5.73 kills, 2.18 digs and .73 blocks per game while hitting .285.

Mike Mocchi, a 6-6, sophomore, outside hitter for MSOE has been chosen the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, Coleman Division Player of the Week for his play last week Mocchi, in a 0-3 (19-30, 12-30, 22-30) loss at Ball State had a team-high 11 kills, adding four digs and an assist block. He hit .889 (eight kills, nine attempts) in a 3-0 (30-18, 30-10, 30-17) conference win over Central State, playing in two games. He added three ace serves, a dig and an assist block in the match. He played one game in the non-league match with Central State, recording four kills (.333), an ace serve, one digs and a solo block. In the three matches, Mocchi hit .348 while averaging 4.83 points, 3.83 kills, 1.00 digs and .50 blocks per game.

Daniel Mathews, a 6-6 sophomore setter for 11th-ranked The Ohio State University (15-4, 3-2 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association), has been chosen the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week. He directed the Buckeye offense to a 3-0 win over Mercyhurst and played a key role in OSU's game two comeback after trailing 29-23. Mathews posted 44 assists in 82 attempts for a .537 assist percentage as Ohio State hit .402 in the match. He added two digs, a kill, an ace serve and a solo block in the match. Trailing 29-24 in game two, Mathews' serve was return back over the net for an overpass kill. His next serve fell in on the Mercyhurst side of the court for an ace. His serving helped the Buckeyes reach 29-all in the game, going on to win, 33-31. For the match, he averaged 14.67 assists per game.

Erik Vogt, a 6-4, senior, middle hitter for fourth-ranked (Division III) Clarke College has been chosen the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, Coleman Division Player of the Week for his play last week in a 3-1 (30-23, 30-27, 29-31, 30-20) defeat of MSOE. He had 24 kills while hitting .622 in the match adding six digs and nine total blocks (one solo and eight assists). Vogt's 24 kills ranks second in Clarke's history for a four-game match and hit .622 hitting percentage ranks seventh in school history. For the match he averaged 6.00 kills, 2.25 blocks and 1.50 digs per game.

John Albertson, a 6-6 freshman middle blocker for
11th-ranked The Ohio State University (14-4, 2-2 Midwestern Intercollegiate
Volleyball Association), has been chosen the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division
Player of the Week and the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National
Player of the Week. He paced the Buckeyes to wins over two nationally ranked
NCAA Division III schools in top-ranked Juniata and fifth-ranked Carthage.
Albertson hit .714 for the two matches with averages of 4.31 points, 3.50
kills, 1.50 blocks and 0.62 digs per game. He tallied a double-double of 17
kills and 11 blocks along with a career-high 23 points to help Ohio State rally
from a 0-2 deficit to defeat Juniata on March 3. Albertson hit .727 against the
Eagles on 22 swings. The rest of the Buckeyes managed a mere .138 attack
percentage. He charted 11 kills with a .692 attack percentage in a sweep of
Carthage on March 5. Albertson increased his season averages to 3.09 points,
2.36 kills, 1.30 blocks and 0.30 digs per game with a .398 attack percentage.

Tyler Galstad, a 6-6, senior, opposite/setter for
fifth-ranked (Division III) Clarke College has been chosen the Midwestern
Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, Coleman Division Player of the Week for
his play last week in helping the Crusaders to three wins in four matches last
week. Clarke won 3-0 (30-23, 30-28, 30-18) at Medaille, 3-0 (30-14, 30-17,
30-16) at Hilbert, a 3-2 loss at D'Youville (30-25, 24-30, 17-30, 36-34, 15-8)
and a 3-1 (22-30, 30-24, 30-24, 30-24) win at Mercyhurst. Galstad had a
team-high 11 kills while hitting .500 at Medaille, adding four digs and two
assist blocks. He had a team-high eight kills (.462), eight assists, two ace
serves, three digs and an assist block at Hilbert. Galstad had five kills
(.120), 13 digs and three block assists in the loss to D'Youville. He recorded
a team-high 15 kills (.394), four digs, a solo block, an assist block and an
assist at Mercyhurst. For the week, Galstad averaged 3.57 points, 3.13 kills,
1.60 digs and .53 blocks per game.
C. J. Macias, a 6-4, Sophomore, outside hitter for 13th-ranked IPFW (6-5 overall, 3-2 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division), has been chosen the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week for his play in the 3-2 (23-30, 28-30, 30-25, 30-21, 15-13) win at 12th-ranked Ohio State and the 3-1 (30-19, 30-20, 28-30, 30-17) home win over Quincy. Macias posted a career-high 39 kills at Ohio State, adding nine digs and an ace serve while hitting .271. He recorded 20 kills (.267), 13 digs, four assist blocks and an ace serve against Quincy. For the weekend, Macias averaged 7.11 points, 6.44 kills, 2.44 digs while hitting .270. This marks the third time in four weeks that Macias has been honored as the Player of the Week.

Galstad recorded a team-high 18 kills, adding eight digs, eight assists and an assist block. He hit .333 in the match for the fifth-ranked (Division III) Crusaders. Galstad averaged 4.62 points, 4.50 kills, 2.00 digs and 2.00 assists per game.

Macias, a 6-4, Sophomore, outside hitter for 15th-ranked IPFW (6-5 overall, 3-2 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division), has been chosen the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week for his play in 3-1 Cardinal victories over eighth-ranked Ball State (30-20, 35-33, 28-30, 30-24) and at Mercyhurst (30-28, 27-30, 30-23, 30-24). Macias had a match-high 32 kills while hitting .303 against Ball State. He added 14 digs, three assist blocks and two assists in the contest. At Mercyhurst the next night, he posted 27 kills and hit .333. He added six digs, a solo block, two assist blocks and a ace serve against the Lakers. For the two matches, Macias averaged 7.94 points, 7.38 kill, 2.50 digs and .75 blocks per game while hitting .316. This marks the second time in three weeks that Macias has been honored as the Player of the Week.

Mike Mocchi, a 6-6, Sophomore, outside hitter for MSOE has been chosen the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, Coleman Division Player of the Week for his play last week in a 3-1 (23-30, 30-16, 30-18, 30-24) loss to second-ranked Carthage. Mocchi recorded 18 kills while hitting .238 and recording eight digs. He averaged 4.5 kills and 2.0 digs per game in the contest.
Zoran Grabovac, a 6-8, 5th-year/Senior middle attacker for eighth-ranked Ball State (11-0 overall, 3-0 MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division), has been chosen the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, Shondell/Dunlap Division Player of the Week for his play against Loyola and Mercyhurst last week. Grabovac played a key role in Ball State's 3-0 (30-14, 30-24, 30-24) victory over No. 12 Loyola and played one game in the 3-0 (30-27, 30-21, 30-28) win over Mercyhurst. Grabovac posted eight kills (.500) and a team-high seven blocks (one solo, seven assists) and an assist against Loyola. He recorded five kills (.571), one dig and one assist block against St. Francis. In the two matches, Grabovac averaged 4.38 points, 3.25 kills and 2.00 blocks while hitting .526 last week.

Macias had a team-high 27 kills against Long Beach State, adding four digs, two total blocks (one solo, one assist) and two assists while hitting .190. In the Juniata match, he recorded match-highs of 23 kills, two aces and nine digs, adding a solo and an assist block and two assists. For the two matches, Macias averaged 6.88 points, 6.25 kills and 1.62 digs per game.

He posted a team-high 14 kills while hitting .400, adding four assist blocks and two digs. Vogt averaged 5.33 points, 4.67 kills, 1.33 blocks and .66 digs per game.

Kozlarek, in the Tuesday match at Carthage, picked up eight kills while hitting .188. He added five ace serve, four digs and six assist blocks. In weekend home matches, Kozlarek had a team-high 13 kills and hit .500 against Mercyhurst, adding five digs, three ace serves and two assists. He posted a team-high 18 kills while hitting .519 against IPFW, adding eight digs, two aces, one assist block and five assists. For the three matches last week, Kozlarek averaged 4.33 kills per game while hitting .429. He averaged 1.44 digs, 1.11 aces and .78 blocks per game.

Erik Vogt, a 6-4 senior middle hitter for Clarke College (5-2 overall, 2-0 MIVA Shondell Division), has been chosen the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, Coleman Division Player of the Week. Playing in two of four matches last weekend, Vogt helped the Crusaders to conference wins over MSOE, 3-0 (30-15, 30-19, 30-25) Friday and Division III top-ranked Carthage, 3-2 (30-27, 24-30, 34-32, 26-30, 15-12) Saturday in road matches. He had six kills and hit .364 against MSOE, adding two ace serves, seven digs, three total blocks (one solo and two assists) and two assists. Against Carthage, Vogt recorded 16 kills while hitting .343. He added 10 digs, six blocks (two solos, four assists) and an assist. For the two matches, Vogt averaged 2.75 kills per game and hit .347. He averaged 2.13 digs and .75 blocks per game.

Outrigger Invitational. The Buckeyes were 2-1, finishing second, defeating fifth-ranked
UCLA, 3-0 (30-27, 32-30, 30-28) and 11th-ranked Penn State, 3-2 (22-30, 30-24,
30-27, 31-33, 17-15) while losing to seventh-ranked Hawaii, 0-3 (19-30, 22-30,
21-30). Katz had 13 kills (.267) in OSU's first-ever victory over UCLA, adding
four digs, three assist blocks and an ace serve. Against Hawaii, he had 10 kills
(.185), adding five digs, two assist blocks and an ace serve. Katz recorded
a career-high 28 kills (.400) against Penn State, adding five digs and three
assist blocks. For the three matches, Katz averaged 4.64 kills, 1.27 digs and
.73 blocks per game while hitting .308. He was named to the Outrigger Invitational
All-Tournament Team for his play.

assist blocks in the match. Against Clarke, playing in two of the three games,
Kozlarek had eight kills while hitting .438. He added six digs and an ace
serve. For the two matches, Kozlarek averaged 5.33 points, 5.00 kills and 2.50
digs per game while hitting .446.

his play in the 3-0 (30-14, 30-23, 30-23) loss to IPFW, the 3-0 (30-23, 30-25,
30-22) win over Stevens Tech and the 3-2 (21-30, 27-30, 30-23, 30-22, 15-10)
loss to Lindenwood. Bellei had 10 kills and hit .389 against IPFW. He recorded
17 kills and hit .556 against Lindenwood, adding four assist blocks and two
digs. Bellei had six kills while hitting .857 against Steven Tech, adding two
ace serves, a dig, a solo block and an assist block. For the three matches, he
averaged 3.50 points, 3.00 kills while hitting .538.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Carthage has been tabbed as the favorite to win the Coleman Division of the MIVA by a vote of the conference coaches. Carthage received all three first place votes while Clarke was picked second and MSOE third. Central State is a provisional member of the Coleman League and is not eligible for the championship.
The coaches also selected the 2006 Pre-Season MIVA Coleman Division All-Conference Team comprised of 10 players (due to a tie) and a libero. Carthage dominated the team with five selections while Clarke and MSOE had three players each named to the team. Voted to the team from Carthage were Ryan Baumgartner, TJ Bellei, Rob Koehler, Shane Olson and Matt Ulmer. Clarke players on the team included Erik Vogt, Joe Collier and Tyler Galstad and from MSOE, Ron Covert, Kevin House and Mike Mocchi.
The Coleman Division begins non-conference play Friday, Jan. 13 with Carthage playing at IPFW, Clarke facing Stevens Tech at MSOE and MSOE hosting Stevens Tech.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The two division that comprise the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) are being renamed to honor former coaches of the league. The A-Division comprised of Ball State, IPFW, Lewis, Loyola, Mercyhurst, Ohio State and Quincy will be named the Shondell/Dunlap Divisione after Dr. Don Shondell, former coach at Ball State and Karl Dunlap, former coach at Ohio State. The B-Division comprised of Carthage, Clarke, MSOE and provisional member Central State will be named the Coleman Division after Jim Coleman, former coach at George Williams.
Shondell posted an overall record of 769-280-6 in 34 seasons as the head coach at Ball State. He won 19 MIVA Championships and 12 MIVA Tournament Championships.
Dunlap had a 74-15-1 record in four years as the head coach at Ohio State. He won one MIVA Championship and over MIVA Tournament Championship. His 1969 team was undefeated at 24-0.
Coleman was the head coach at George Williams College in 1973, 1974 and 1976, winning the NAIA National Championship in 1974. He became the second-ever head coach for the USA men's national team and led the team to the 1968 Olympics. He coached until 1970, again in 1979-80 and once more in 1990. Coleman was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1992.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State has been selected the preseason favorite to win the 2006 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championship. The voting was done by the conference coaches representing Ball State, IPFW, Lewis, Loyola, Mercyhurst, Ohio State and Quincy who comprise the A-Division of the Conference. The Buckeyes finished first in the voting by the conference coaches, receiving five first-place votes. IPFW was ranked second and Loyola third with each receiving a first-place vote. Ball State was picked fourth, Quincy fifth, Lewis sixth and Mercyhurst seventh. Ohio State finished second last season in the regular season and went on to win the MIVA Tournament. Loyola won the regular season championship in 2005.
The coaches also selected the 2006 Pre-Season MIVA All-Conference Team. Ohio State had four players named to the team while Ball State, IPFW and Loyola had two players each. Ohio State's Layne Dreven (MH, 6-8, Sr./Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.), Mark Greaves (OH, 6-4, Sr., Fenton, Mo.), Conor Martin (L, 6-0, So., Avon, Lake, Ohio) and Daniel Mathews (S, 6-6, So., Shorewood, Wis.) were named to the team with Ball State adding Nick Meyer (OA, 6-8, Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Evan Berg (OA, 6-3, 5th/Sr., Bristol, Wis.). Also named to the team were IPFW's Serdar Sikca (MH, 6-7, Sr., Istanbul, Turkey) and C.J. Macias (OH, 6-4, So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Findlay) and Loyola's Chris Kozlarek (OPP, 6-3, Sr., Evergreen Park, Ill.) and James Grunst (MB, 6-8, Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.).
Ball State's Berg was a first-team All-MIVA selection in 2005. He averaged 2.42 kills and 2.41 digs per game in 2005. Meyer was a second-team selection. He averaged 4.18 kills, 1.43 digs and .77 blocks per game last season. IPFW's Macias was a second-team selection at Findlay last season. Last season he averaged 4.79 kills and 1.54 digs per game. Sikca is a two-time all-conference selection and was name to the 2005 MIVA All-Tournament Team. He averaged 2.54 kills and 1.47 blocks per game while hitting .417. Loyola's Grunst was a first-team All-MIVA selection in 2005, the 2004 MIVA Freshman of the Year and a second-team all-conference selection that season. He hit .471 last season while averaging 2.70 kills and 1.51 blocks per game. Kozlarek was a 2005 first-team All-MIVA selection. He averaged 3.76 kills, 1.77 digs and .73 blocks per game while hitting .322. Ohio State's Dreven was a first-team All-MIVA selection in 2005 and was named to the All-Tournament team. He hit .450 last season and averaged 2.05 kills and 1.26 blocks per game. Greaves was a first-team All-MIVA selection in 2005 and a second-team AVCA All-American. He averaged 3.46 kills, 1.55 digs and .64 blocks per game. Martin played in 32 matches last season and averaged 1.92 digs per game. Mathews was the 2005 MIVA Freshman of the Year, a second-team all-conference selection and was named the 2005 MIVA Tournament Most Valuable Player. He averaged 13.10 assists, 1.48 digs and 1.04 blocks per game in 2005.
The A-League teams begin play Jan. 6 when Lewis, Ohio State and Quincy will see action The MIVA B-Division of Central State, Carthage, Clarke and MSOE begins play Jan. 13 with Carthage, Clarke and MSOE playing. A B-Division preseason team and poll will be announced later.
